Conversion

Basically, every Otto engine can be converted to the fuel E85.

The quantity of the fuel simply has to be adapted to the lower heating value of the E85. The parts containing and transporting the fuel should be checked carefully and replaced if necessary. With a professional conversion an additional consumption of 25% to 30% must be reckoned.

Additional control units for E85 operation engage with the engine control to adapt the amount of fuel injected to the particular fuel blend. Therefore, those additional control inuts must be tested for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

By engaging with the engine control the exhaust emission characteristic is changed and must be checked professionaly. The particular emission standard of your vehicle must be complied with after the conversion. For a registration according to §21 / 19.2 StVZO a professional installation and a positive exhaust emission test are strongly required.

The fuel/air-mixture must be greased additionally to work against the bad cold start characteristics of E85 at an engine temperature below 20°C. Therefore, the additional control unit should be equipped with a temperature sensor and a corresponding software.

A self-acting regulation between the different fuel blends is only possible with a special ethanol sensor.

Only certified control units can guarantee you a faultless function and an ideal fuel consumption.

We recommend an additional control unit co-develeoped by us for the conversion, that comes up with the high expectations and regulations

To make cold start at temperatures lower than 0°C easier we recommend the installation of an engine-preheating system.
The principle of DEFA WarmUp Standard is easy: it preheats the cooling water or oil (in air-cooled engines) with a type-specific installation kit. This makes the start easier, reduces the engine wastage and saves both fuel and the environment.

To convert a carburetor engine to E85 the sprinkling has to be scaled up. With two-stroke engines please mind that the engine oil has to admix with the E85 effectively. On this account we have tested several mineral and synthetic two-stroke engine oils. So far, we can only recommend Castrol Greentec XTS.
Older injection systems like a Single Point system system can be adapted to bio alcohol-operation by increasing the fuel compression or by installation of a special E85 control unit.

For the start performance not to worsen after these monovalent and mechanical conversions, we recommend to drive on a mixture of E70 when temperatures are below 15° C.

We point out that engine trouble is possible if the exhaust emission characteristics are not checked and adapted if necessary. We strongly recommend assigning the conversion to an authorized garage.
